Optimization models for expansion planning of power systems aim to determine capacities, investment timing, and location satisfy the demands while minimizing total cost. The have become complex in recent years reflect both regulations on conventional energy sources increasing penetration renewable (RES). This paper reviews basic concepts optimization systems. We first explain definition features generation (GEP), transmission (TEP), (GTEP). To address computational challenges large-scale problems, we review several simplifications including temporal spatial aggregation, decomposition methods. also addresses system reliability defined as probability satisfying load demand withstanding failures components. goal this is provide a research overview, discuss trends systems, suggest directions future research. • provides overview investigated.
